cancer foods Mesothelioma PreventionConsidering how asbestos is almost always involved in the contraction of mesothelioma, avoiding areas that have high amounts of asbestos particles (dust) is of paramount importance. However, for some of us that is not an option as it may be part of our daily work. Due to the popularity of asbestos as a fire resistant thermal insulator, it is used in a variety of areas from ship building to construction materials to fire retardant materials. Mesothelioma Prevention BroccoliIt also sees use in roofing and flooring. As such, the workplace should be properly regulated by the authorities as to the amount of exposure deemed safe for humans. Quitting smoking is a top priority for smokers as smokers represent a very high risk group. Beyond that, our other option is to look at foods that are known for their anti-cancer properties since pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma are all forms of cancer. mesothelioma doctor Mesothelioma DoctorsThis article will list out mesothelioma specialists throughout America while paying special attention on one doctor, Dr. David Sugarbaker. Mesothelioma Doctors PictureDr.David Sugarbaker has been at the forefront of pleural mesothelioma research in the last decade. He believes in very aggressive treatments for patients. These treatments typically include surgery to remove tumor growth, chemotherapy both during and after surgery as well as radiation treatment. He pioneered the tri-modal treatment which is the actual removal of the lung lining and sometimes parts of the lung itself while using chemotherapy and radiation. His treatments have been highly successfull with many of his patients extending their lifespans far beyond what was originally thought possible. He created the Internationl Pleural Mesothelioma Program which focuses on developing better, more effective treatment protocols for patients that suffer from pleural mesothelioma. He is the Chief of the Thoracic Surgery division at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston Massachusetts. Phone – (617) 732-6824

Pericardial Mesothelioma

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Pericardial Mesothelioma is as extremely rare type of mesothelioma that affects the pericardium region of the body. Pericardial Mesothelioma HeartThe pericardium is a membrane that lines the heart. pericardial mesothelioma Pericardial MesotheliomaIt is the least common form of mesothelioma accounting for less than 5% of all cases with pleural mesothelioma making up 60% of all cases while peritoneal mesothelioma see’s about 30%. While it is generally agreed that pericardial mesothelioma stems from asbestos exposure, the way asbestos affects the heart lining is poorly understood. This is mainly becuase of the rarity of percardial mesothelioma cases as well as the lack of research in the area. What is generally agreed upon is that asbestos fibers lodge themselves onto the heart lining and cause the cells in the membrane to multiply rapidly. This causes the membrane to thicken and eventually tumors emerge. While difficult to diagnose, symptoms include chest pains, murmurs, heart palpitations, constant fatigue, difficulty breathing (especially when lying down) and fever. To confirm the cancer, X-Rays, MRI’s and a biopsy is performed.

It is essentially mesothelioma cancer of the lung, more precisely, the lung lining. While not proven, it seems very likely that exposure to asbestos is the primary cause of Pleural Mesothelioma. Persons who have been exposed to asbestos and who are also smokers run a serious chance of getting this form of mesothelioma. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include weight loss, chest pain, shortness of breath and lumps in the chest area. Normal breathing may also be difficult and painful for the patient. It is a difficult cancer to diagnose mainly because the symptoms resemble many other conditions. Only through X-rays, CT Scans and performing a biopsy can the doctor truly ascertain if the patient has a confirmed case of pleural mesothelioma.
